				There is pleasure in producing a physical object.

				I learned a lot from the elders in my family, dear friends, and fellow crafters which needs to be kept alive and passed on.

				As a designer, finding a knitting or crochet pattern and following it results in appreciation for the work of other designers.

				For vintage patterns especially, I feel a kinship with generations of women who did needlework to clothe their families or make something pretty, often to give to a friend.

				There is a need for unique, hand made items as well as the mass-produced things we normally buy. 
			
 
			- 
				Since my neuromuscular disease has progressed, I have had to abandon more physically demanding activities. 
			
 
		
		
			I learned to sew, embroider, and crochet as a child. In college and graduate school I picked up knitting. Later I learned to spin and as might be expected from my formal training in chemistry, took up vegetable dyeing too. I am also interested in the history of technology -- the roots of computer programming are in the textile industry!
