It really looks like spring now. Many trees are starting to leaf out and the lilacs, dogwoods, azaleas, and other blooming shrubs and trees are at peak color. I took the camera along when I went out to walk Bode around the block yesterday, but discovered the battery needed recharging.
The organic lettuce mix, Romaine, and basil seeds I planted in pots last week were sprouting yesterday and showing two leaflets this morning. This is a lot later than I started seeds last year. There are fewer sunny window sills here, but it is far enough into the season that I put them out on the deck to get started.
It will take a while, but I am getting accustomed to the rhythyms of this place. The sun shines in the kitchen window in mid-morning. That is a good time to have a brunch or do the dishes. The front room lights up in the evening. Because of the shadow from the hill out back, it stays cool on the deck and inside until noon. We have been sleeping in later.
I made popovers for breakfast this morning. The stove here has a ceramic cook top and the oven has a window and a light, so was able to check progress as I did the dishes from last night. If you open the oven door, the draft may spoil the result. The last time I had popovers was when my sister visited me in Milwaukee at the end of May 2004. We had them at a nice restaurant near the lakefront.
Popovers are fun to make for kids too. When Geoff was growing up, we could take care of an entire batch on Saturday mornings as soon as they could be touched, dripping melted butter and honey or jam.
