I often put Bode on his leash and take him along to the mail box. Today we did that and he marked it well, then we went by the compost pile and the bird feeder tree for the same treatment. He caught the scent of something and I saw it was a little robin and got him turned around and into the house before he got near it.
I then went out and caught it and put it in the tree. Figured it was a bit too small to fend for itself on the ground, in particular, from my pets and the neighbor barn cats. It had feathers, but not much of a tail, was hopping more than flying. It still had the baby bird instincts. When I held my hand over it to pick it up, it opened its mouth to be fed. The parents seemed to be around, so hope it can make its way back to the nest.
It is still damp here, rained through the night, but no rain yet today. Between nature’s fireworks and the ones for the holiday, poor Bode doesn’t get much rest. It is a lot quieter than in my Milwaukee apartment though. Someone had a private party with fireworks and amplified music going over in the next hollow on Saturday. Then last night, the Elderton fireworks could be heard but were not really visible except for some pastel flashes in the sky. The fireflies (lightning bugs) were out in good numbers, prettier than the pyrotechnics.
Yesterday after getting up I late spent the morning getting caught up. It was really rainy. I made bread and put a roast in the oven (to slice and eat cold later). Then it was bath time. Bode did pretty well, had to hold the box of dog biscuits over the tub to get him to go in, but as usual, once he got started it went well. I toweled him off and gave him his rewards. Since I was already wet, showered. We both were damp when I went over to my folks. I took along red, white, and blue — bing cherries, focaccia, and blueberries as well as some taboulleh. When I walked Bode, I found a patch of mint growing by the culvert. It really perked up the taboulleh, as did the freshly picked scallions.
I put garlic olive oil, some of my fresh basel, salt, pepper, and asiago cheese on top the bread. My dad liked the focaccia and he is pretty choosy with food. With the basel, chives, and thyme I started from seed (and put in a planter to take indoors in the fall as well as planting in the garden) and the rosemary plant I bought should have a lot of material to make more.
